ASABA— GOVERNOR James Ibori of Delta State said yesterday that he would instruct his defence counsel to file an application opposing the claim by the truck driver, one James Onanefe Ochuko Ibori, who approached an Abuja High Court, weekend, claiming to be the real Ibori that was convicted by the Bwari Upper Area Court in September 1995. The governor dismissed the man as a faceless person who was out “to cover up the emerging evidence of tampering with court records.”
The governor who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Abel Oshevire, in a statement in Asaba yesterday said: “The attention of the Delta State Government has been drawn to a report in some of today’s (yesterday) newspapers, and wish to react as follows:
*The persons who linked the conviction in CR81/95 with Chief James Onanefe Ibori, Governor of Delta State are once more at it. This time they have secured a faceless truck driver to depose to an affidavit in support of an application to join the on-going case at Abuja High Court as an interested party on the ground that he, the truck driver, the applicant was the person convicted of negligent conduct and criminal breach of trust in charge number CR/81/95 on the 28th of September, 1995 by the Upper Area Court, Bwari.
*This is yet another attempt to interfere with the on-going trial with a view to covering up the emerging evidence of tampering with court records of the Upper Area Court so that persons responsible for this criminal act would escape justice.
*His excellency, the governor of Delta State, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, wishes to disassociate himself from this application, the objective of which is to stall the proceedings at the Abuja High Court and will, therefore, instruct his defence team to oppose the application vehemently.”
