Ex-FEDECO Boss Wants Law to Protect INEC From Jaiyeola Andrews in Asaba Former Chairman of the defunct Federal Electoral Commission (FEDECO), Justice Ovie Whiskey, has called on the legislature to enact a law to prevent any person or political party from unnecessary interference with the functions of the Indepen-dent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He argued that if it was impossible for a peaceful elections to be conducted by the electoral commission, then there would always be rancour and violence. Delivering a lecture yesterday in Asaba during the workshop organised by Delta state chapter of electoral commission (DSIEC), Whiskey added that "in the last general election, my wife and I could not cast our votes in Agbarho because the polling stations could not be used for voting". The legal luminary, who gave pass mark to the commission, said the electoral commission in the country was the soul of democracy, noting that unnecessary court actions, particularly the issuing of interlocufory order made on applications brought by one party against other and some times against the commission, hindered the discharge of the commision's duty. In his paper titled: "ELECTORAL COMMISSION AS THE SOUL OF DEMOCRACY," Whiskey stressed that it was the ambition of any electoral commission in the country to conduct free and fair elections, saying. He reasoned that an Electoral Commission or body that was appointed justly and fairly with no bias against any political party, would more likely conduct free and fair electios, saying the registration of voters goes beyond elections and that voters registration and the conduct of elections are subject to the direction and the supervision of electoral commission.
