Why FG Suspended EEG, By Usman From Yakubu Musa in Kano Minister of State for Financce, Mrs Nenani Usman, has said the Federal Government suspended Export Expansion Grant (EEG) because it had been abused by exporters. Usman who spoke while visiting some tannery industries yesterday in Kano, however, noted that the scheme would be reviewed in order to forestall its future abuse by the exporters. " The government could not afford to fold its arms and watch people abuse the scheme" Usman told the manufacturers. Speaking further, the minister, assured the exporters that " the scheme would be looked into in order to eliminate out all the abuses". Earler, the chairman of Nigeria Tanners Council Alhaji Lawan Garo, pointed out that " our sector as one of the beneficiaries of the government good policies, partcularly the EEG scheme. " I Would like to mention that because of your laudable policy of EGG our subsector now employs over twenty thousand direct employees and over one millon indirectly, he said. According to him one of the big tanneries in the state's currently considering setting up a fourty millon dollars ( shoe factory, while a big chemical company for production of leather and textiles chemicals is also underway. He, however, pointed out that the sudden suspension of the EEG scheme is not only disruptive but may have a negative effects on the growth of the industry.
