NAPTIP Nabs 2 Suspected Human Traffickers
From George Oji in Abuja

National Agency For The Prohibition of Traffic in Persons And Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) said it has recorded major breakthroughs following the arrests in Contonou, Republic of Benin, of two suspects and four victims.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja yesterday, the agency's Executive Secretary Mrs. Carol Ndagubah said the victims and the alleged traffickers were all traced to Uromi, Edo State.

Ndagubah further said that with the assistance of the suspects, her agency also apprehend two juju priests, Messrs. Goddy Akhimeon and Prince Omoruyi who usually bewitche, intimidate and harass the victims on the directives of the traffickers.

The Executive Secretary disclosed that the importance of the arrest was that it would help her agency break the circle of conspiracy of silence usually experienced with deportees.

According to her, the problem the agency usually encounters in prosecuting suspected traffickers was the unwillingness of their victims to give evidence because they usually pass through spiritual systems, involving the taking of oats, which forbids them to reveal the traffickers.

"Our investigation efforts in human trafficking activities have been stalled as it were by disturbing lack of information from victims. We found out that when they are deported this conspiracy of silence even continues," Ndagubah revealed.

She disclosed that one of the suspected traffickers Mrs. Carol Okoya after recruiting the girls, took them to Akhimeon's shrine and told him that she was taking the girls to Lagos to work in her shop, and that he should prepare initiation process so that they don't steal her money.

Some of the items recovered from the juju priests included cut female pubic hair, finer nails belonging to a Nigerian young girl called Bridget Ogboni who is presently in Belgium, photographs and register containing names of some of the girls that were summoned before the shrines, sperm specimen believed to have been sent by some Whitemen abroad etc.

Meanwhile, the agency said it would commence the prosecution of suspects at the Benin High Court from next week.
