Guobadia Identifies Obstacles to Successful Polls From Jaiyeola Andrews in Asaba Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Dr Abel Guobadia has identified persistent inter-ethnic crisis, and inter-communal disputes over land and natural resources as a major obstacle to successful elections. Speaking yesterday in Asaba during a workshop organised by Delta State Chapter of INEC Guobadia equally noted that "due to overriding quest for economic and political power, manipulation, violence and thuggery are employed to disrupt the polls". The INEC boss who was represented by his special assistant, Mr. Osaze Uzzi, observed that due to suspicion, recrimination and hostility among various ethnic groups elections in such areas are seen as a contest for power. Stressing further, Guobadia hinted that elections are often rigged, thuggery employed, and unethical practices by warring ethnic groups were used in order to gain power at all costs. Guobadia blamed the failure of past democratic dispensations on elections rigging dispute over election results, political acrimonious, violence and general instability, among others. He noted that to strengthen electoral democracy, proper conduct should be the watchword, adding that elections in Nigeria since independence have been contentious and increasingly confrontational. The INEC boss averred that in their bid to win at the polls, political parties, candidates and their supporters have often times jettisoned the norms of good behaviour. He however assured that the outcome of the workshop would be considered and any aspect that requires constitutional amendment would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for consideration.
