MTS Relaunches Service By Okechukwu Kanu Telecommunications outfit, MTS first Wireless has re-launched its services commercially. The company, which pioneered wireless telecommunications services in Nigeria in 1992 and was shut down in 1995 over disagreement between itself and NITEL, will be serving its offering to the public on its new CDMA2000 1X technology supplied and deployed by China Putian/Eastcom. At the ceremony marking its re-entry, MTS' Chief executive, Richmond Aggrey said MTS would provide an integrated solution facilitated by the application of the most cost-effective technologies. He welcomed the role of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) within the industry, saying that the challenges MTS had faced during its shutdown were the result of the absence of proper legal and regulatory framework at that time. "With today's NCC business is better defined," Aggrey said. The vision of MTS, he said, was to be in the top five telecom companies in Nigeria, delivering first class and affordable telecommunications service around the country. He also predicted that MTS would go on to become a key player in the large Nigerian telecom sector and then expand into the sub-region Aggrey said MTS would be providing a bouquet of four ICT services at reliable and affordable rates. He said MTS had been born out of the frustration he felt in 1985 when he had to make a booking for a call from Port Harcourt In 1992 the then Federal executive Council offered MTS the first Cellular Network License in Nigeria and approved a joint venture between NITEL and Digital Communications Limited of Atlanta Georgia.
