Bayelsa Airport to Gulp N8.5bn From John Iwori in Yenagoa Not less than of N8.5 billion would be spent by the Bayelsa State Government to build its airport in one of the numerous suburbs of the state capital, Yenagoa. With a land area of 16.5 kilometers and a completion time of 24 months, the first plane is expected to land on the Bayelsa Airport strip by November 2006, provided the contractors are mobilized to site before the end of this year. Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha disclosed this yesterday at a stakeholders forum at Creek Motel, Yenagoa. In attendance were members of the National Assembly who hail from Bayelsa State, Minister of Aviation, Mallam Isa Yuguda, Special Adviser to the President on Petroleum and Energy, Dr. Edmond Dakoru, Director General, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Engr. Fidelis Onyeyiri, members of the state executive council, representatives of the multinational oil companies operating in the state and commercial banks. Though the governor expressed concern about the total cost of constructing the airport, he, however noted the enormous benefits derivable from the project. His words: "From our preliminary expenditure survey, it is estimated that the project will cost about $60 million which translates to about N8.5 billion.
