Duke Accuses Group of Killing Aide
From Amby Uneze in Calabar

Cross River State Governor,Donald Duke, has accused the Afam Peoples Congress of killing Mr Eshu Egbelo, his special adviser on Inter government Relations.

In a state wide radio and television broadcast yesterday, Duke described the murder as brutal, occasioned by blind hatred, envy and other manifestations of a poisoned mind.

According to him, "perpetrators of this dastardly act may think they have triumphed over their perceived enemy. But they are wrong "stating that this is one murder whose culprits would never be allowed to go unpunished.

He warned those who may wish to house any of the perpetrators to desist, as they would also be treated as accomplices, and that the police have been directed to be on the alert to prevent any breach of the peace.

Duke said tribalism was like a monster, which could be easily reared, nurtured and when it reaches maturity, could no longer be controlled. He said "Fellow Cross Riverians, in the year 2002 when activities of Afam Peoples Congress became widely known in the state, I did warn, through several broadcasts to the people of our state of the danger posed by a small group, who in their efforts to wrest power, have yielded to the temptation of whipping up ethnic sentiments amongst our people."

Meanwhile, the state House of Assembly yesterday in a resolution condemned the killing, and resolved that it was not an ethnic matter, rather a criminal one, which has to be pursued in that direction.

However, information reaching THISDAY indicated that the police have arrested seven persons, suspected to be involved in the killing, while the three policemen who accompanied the deceased to effect the arrest have been equally arrested.
