Kalu Wants Increased Attention on Agriculture From Emeka Osondu in Umuahia Governor Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia State, has said for the country to achieve self-sustenance, adequate attention should be paid to agricultural production as a major source of revenue generation. Kalu, who spoke in Umuahia yesterday when he received some agricultural experts from China, regretted the decline in agricultural production which has seriously affected the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He also lamented the over-reliance on crude oil, which is militating against the growth of agriculture, formerly the mainstay of the nation's economy before the discovery of crude oil, and therefore urged the Federal Government to inculcate agriculture in the ongoing economic reforms. He urged government not to ban importation of equipment and materials that facilitate food production, and decried the huge sum of money spent on importation of food, adding that Nigeria cannot continue to depend on food importation. Earlier, Leader of the team, and Programme Manager of the state Agricultural Development Programme (ADP), Dr Eme Okoro, said he had come to present the nine-man team which would help revitalise the Igwu River Basin and the agricultural projects in the state to him.
