Sokoto Councils Owe over N877m From Ahmed Oyerinde in Sokoto An inquiry into the accounts of the Sokoto State local government councils, has revealed a combined debt of N877.8million owed by the 23 local government This is contained in the report submitted to State Goevrnor, Atahiru Bafarawa by the committee set up to verify local government liabilities/projects in the state. Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Musa Ibrahim Sokoto, told Bafarawa that the committee only recognised genuine liabilities in the course of its investigation. Sokoto, who is also the chairman, local government service commission, said the committee took its time to inspect all projects, as well as cash books of each local government before compiling its report. He added that certain claims by the local government staff such as money that were supposed to be remitted to Internal Board of Revenue and personal assistance to people, were not considered as liabilities. Responding, Bafarawa thanked members of the committee for a job well done"adding that the state was lucky to have the type of people that constitutes the committee and promised to study their reports with a view to settling the liabilities in good time. He, however, said separate committee would soon be inaugurated, to work out how the state would go about settling the liabilities. His words, "But I can assure you that we are going to settle the contractors, particularly those handling on-going projects, so as to enable them continue with their work."
