Obong Stands Dethroned, Kingmakers Insist From Amby Uneze in Calabar For the second time in four months, the Obong of Calabar and patriarch of the Efik Kingdom, His Eminence, Edidem, Professor Nta Elijah Henshaw VI, has been dethroned by the Cobham Town Combined Council (CTCC), the kingmakers. On March, the Etubom Bassey Ekpo Bassey-led CTCC had announced the dethronement of the Obong on the grounds that he did not perform the required ritual at the "Efe Asabo" shrine, where the capping of Obong usually takes place. The latest onslaught on the Obong is engineered by the same group, which is accusing him of lacking any right whatsoever, to enter into the 'Efe Asabo' shrine, because he has earlier been dethroned. According to the group "the truth is that the people of Cobham Town cannot permit any of the conspirators to enter the Efe Asabo ever again, they would not be allowed to dance on the grave of Cobham V." They described the Obong as a conspirator, adding that he stated in a recent press briefing that the Efe was part of the palace and belong to all Efiks, stressing that "nothing could be farther from the truth. He either does not know our tradition or is being plain dishonest with it." The CTCC in a statement said all Etuboms loyal to the Obong are also banned from entering the shrine.
