Police Admit Killing Engineer
Ekiti
From Dipo Okunmuyide in Ado-Ekiti

Ekiti State Police command yesterday took responsibility for killing an innocent person, one Muyiwa Popoola, who was shot on July 24 and allowed to bleed to death over an allegation of armed robbery in Ado-Ekiti.

Popoola, a civil engineer with a construction company carrying out the renovation of Ado-Ekiti township stadium, was shot by the police during an attempt to arrest him along with three other people after a robbery incident in Ado-Ekiti.

Mr. Patrick Egbuniwe, the state Acting Commissioner of Police, made the admission, saying Muyiwa was innocent.

While answering questions from members of the state House of Assembly over the unfortunate incident, the police boss explained that after due process of investigation, it was disclosed that Muyiwa was shot by an overzealous policeman acting on misinformation, describing the killing as unintentional.

He admitted that a case of professional misconduct has been established against the policeman, who shot the suspect, and that he has been charged to court.

Consequently, some policemen, according to him, have been dismissed and would face murder charge while the DPO in the area has also been queried, adding that the DPO has been redeployed to the Police headquarters while a panel of investigation was put in place to look into the case.

Contributing at the Assembly, Honourable Sule Longe of Ekiti East Constituency 11 and Honourable Tope Ademiluyi of Ekiti West among others commended the courage of the police for admitting their mistake and advised that such incident should not be allowed to repeat itself in the future.

Commending on the incident, the Speaker of the Assembly, Honourable Friday Aderemi, regretted the incidence and pleaded on behalf of Police command to compensate his family.
