UNIBEN Raises Dress Code Panel Edo From Omon-Julius Onabu in Benin-City Authority University of Benin (UNIBEN) has set up a Dress Code Committee to fashion out a dress code for its students, as part of its efforts aimed at checking indecent dressing at the university. Discloing this to newsmen while highlighting problems and challenges facing his administration in the last six months of existence, the university Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Nwanze, said the idea of a dress code in UNIBEN was not intended to "encroach" on the privacy of individual students. Nwanze, who noted that he has been very conscious of the fact that no university in the country could survive solely on the monthly financial allocation from Federal Government, said the dress code committee is headed by Prof.(Mrs) Ijeoma Ahonkhai. "I think the essence of the dress code is wholesome; it is to ensure decency in dressing among the community, but I'm not an advocate of undue regimentalisation," the vice-chancellor noted, adding that "I don't think, for example, that wearing of trousers by girls or ladies is wrong: it depends on the tailoring; trousers should not be tailored in such a way as to provoke unwholesome imaginations." The Vice-Chancellor revealed that he inherited over N1.3 million as debt, mainly made up of arrears of salaries and allowances to lecturers and other categories of staff, noted that he has, in the last six months been travelling the lenghth and breadth of the country with cap in hand for the much needed funds.
