About 500 Lagosians have benefited from free medical services being sponsored by the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the America (ANPA) led by Dr. Nurudeen Olowopopo since its inception.
The healthcare delivery was made possible through an arrangement between the Lagos State government and ANPA in which the association offered free consultations and treatment. Within thesame period, the association has performed over 30 surgical operations at the Lagos General Hospital.
During a courtesy call on the Oba of Lagos, preceding the commencement of the consultation and treatment at the Iga Iduganran palace, Olowopopo described the exercise as a "payback" mission designed to give something back to the people by offering free service to those who could not afford the cost of treatment.
He said the group, which has non-Nigerians on board, has been able to convince their friends and colleagues, who are committed to fighting poverty and disease, to partner with them on the mission.
Also speaking, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Leke Pitan, added that the visiting team has provided all consumables, necessary for a successful exercise, noting that the state would provide facilities and personnel that would support the team especially on operations to be performed.
The commissioner said that the 40-man team of physicians have demonstrated a sense of partiotism that deserved commendation, adding that local medical personnels would benefit immensely in from the experience of the delegates.
While receiving the medical team, the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Aremu Akiolu, commended members of the team for their vision and called on Nigerians in the diaspora to come and contribute their own quota to the development of the country.
While also commending the state government for its unparalleled record in healthcare delivery in Nigeria, Akiolu urged ANPA to make its visits an annual one and of longer duration.
The exercise which would last for one week at the Iga Idugaran in Lagos would be extended to Badagry from August 16 at the Town Hall.
