Chess Players Storm Nigerian Breweries Tourney
By Ayodeji Fashikun

The soccer event of the Athens Olympics starts today, two days ahead of the official opening of the Games while Nigeria's interest lies in the fortunes of the Falcons, which will be on parade on Saturday against Japan.

Argentina will face Serbia-Montenegro in Group C while hosts, Greece, will be in wait for South Korea in their Group A match.

Tomorrow, two of Africa's representatives will begin the campaign to sustain the high profile of the continent in Olympic football in which Nigeria and Cameroon hold the record of winning the gold medals before.

The football event expected to end on the 28th has 16 teams in contention with the other two African representatives being Ghana and Morocco.

Meanwhile, 15 of the 16 teams in Athens entered 38 over-aged players as against 30 that were entered in Sydney. Of these, 10 teams registered the maximum three over-aged players, while Costa Rica and Mali had one each and Serbia Montenegro presented no over-aged player.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Ayo Omidiran, Head of NFA's Female Committee, who spoke on a Lagos-based radio yesterday, assured that the Falcons would not let the nation down.

"Our girls are in high spirit to do the nation proud. They have played several matches to tune them up for the task and we are expecting a better outing than the last time out."
