It is going to be a series of grudge encounters in eight centres across the nation today when teams engage themselves in the first leg of the home and away phase for the Coca-Cola FA Cup with the known teams harbouring the fear of being beaten by the minnows who are full of grim determination.
The Cup that is noted for its traditional upsets has lived up to expectation with big teams like Kwara United, Enyimba, Shooting Stars, Gombe United, Kano Pillars etc haven fallen by the way side.
What looks like the star encounter is the fixture pairing Yobe Stars of Damaturu against neighbours, El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri. Both teams would have to contend with the quality of their bench to determine the superior.
In the border town of Fufore in Adamawa State, fans will watch the home match between home team, Adamawa United take on the winner of the Rangers of Enugu and Niger Tornadoes.
In Osun State, Dynamos of Katsina will in Oshogbo host Sharks of Port Harcourt that had to go past Enyimba of Aba's feeder team. If by the words of Coach Daniel Boye, who said that Sharks will not progress beyond the next stage of the Coca-Cola FA Cup, then Dynamos will win the round. But the former Bendel Insurance coach stressed that Sharks are poised to win the Coca-Cola FA Cup this year as compensation for Governor Peter Odili.
"We lost painfully last year but the governor never took it as a loss. Instead, he celebrated by lavishing cash and honour on us. But we want to win this year to say thank you to him," he said.
In Katsina, Taraba United will host Arsenal of Benin. If big names play football, one would have easily awarded the match to Insurance but anything can happen. As hosts of the final, Insurance will want to qualify to win thus, may be more fired than the ordinary to play well despite their 5-0 league defeat at the last weekend.
In Abeokuta, bridge-builders, Julius Berger welcome Makwada United while Sunshine Stars of Akure will be accommodating Nassarawa United while in what looks like a local derby, the Dolphin will host city-mates, Bisalo United. While, in Katsina, Jigawa Stars will be hosting Jos team, JC Raiders in an all northern teams affair.
