Portland Paints Gives 5-Year Guarantee on Products
Paint
By Bennett Oghifo

Portland Paints and Products Nigeria Limited, a foremost quality paints manufacturer in the country, has placed five years guarantee on its range of products to shore-up user confidence.

The unprecedented sales strategy, the first in the nation's history of paints manufacture, was unveiled by Mr. Bayo Osibo, Managing Director/Chief Executive of the company, at the weekend, in Lagos.

The range of products, Sandex Textured, Sandex Trowel and Sandex Matt, are due for relaunch on Thursday, this week, at Muson Centre, Shell Hall, Onikan, Lagos.

"We gave the five years guarantee because we are sure of the products' quality...if the paint fails within five years, then we will repaint your building free of charge, and if we don't, sue us," said Mr. Osibo, who explained that the guarantee is legally enforceable.

Osibo said things fail for various reasons, but when they do, people should take responsibility as initiated by his company with the new guarantee. It is a show of corporate responsibility for the company to seek to replace defective paints.

"We want other manufacturers to do the same and with time the quality of products manufactured in the country will improve tremendeously...they will be able to compete globally," he said, adding that Nigerian products have reputation problem outside the country.

These products, he said, were reformulated after extensive research, and "we are bold to make this promise because we have gone an extra mile to include ingredients that reinforce the basic materials, which are first grade of international standards". Other contributory factors, he said, are the production environment, process, management and quality control.

The products, he said, were formulated to give a bench mark resilience in extreme weather conditions, to protect and add beauty to buildings. For instance, he said Sandtex Matt is a ready mix fine textured exterior and interior decorative paint well known internationally. Its composition consists of a unique terpolymer resin base, mica and fine granite-based aggregate to give it long life. It also consists of carefully selected pigments, which provide beautiful colours and biocide to limit the propagation of organic growth. It is formulated for exterior finish to ensure that it does not flake or peel when correctly applied. "It behaves like a semi permeable skin on walls, allowing the wall to 'breathe' such that wet surfaces get dry without the power of evaporation and peeling of the paint because it is highly water proof and durable."

Osibo said the primary market for these products are high budget projects, particularly those of governments and of blue-chip companies. "Most high-rise building developers use floor tiles and mosaic tiles on walls because they feel paints don't last and tiles remain, rain or shine...but mosaic tiles chip off just as floor tiles on wall creating an ugly effect...besides, these tiles are difficult to replace, because the colours cannot be found."

He said there is no need for the use of tiles with the reformulated paints, which has been designed for high heat and salt coated environment like Victoria Island,

Lekki, in Lagos, Bonny in Rivers State, Maiduguri and other areas.

"We want to prove to government that imported paints are not better than locally manufactured paints...manufacturers make paints for their environment...you can't sit in Nigeria and formulate paint for use in Finland...manufacturers study the environment",he said.

He said the paint would be ideal for government housing estates and offices because they are good for intensive use areas. "Paints are used to beautify and protect structures of high value", he said, adding that a good paint's appearance and smell do not change after a long time in the can.

Portland Paints rank among the biggest five members in the high profile paint industry comprising of more than 700 registered and unregistered companies. "The attainment of this position, he said, is as a result of the quality of our product and services, which has helped us to maintain a good reputation and a reliable customer base from within the building industry professional circuit such as architects, quantity surveyors, builders, engineers and Property developers...we also have the largest range in decorative products better than other companies in the industry...this makes us clearly stand out," said Osibo.
