Women group decries rape in Sudan, blames African govts

AFRICAN leaders have been charged to declare the war in Darfur, Sudan as "a genocide against women" and take urgent steps to stop the on-going rape of women and girls, especially by the pro-government Janjaweed Arab militia.
Women Against Rape, Sexual Harassment and Exploitation (WARSHE) made the call yesterday in a statement by its co-ordinator, Olutoyin Mejumi and treasurer, Oluyemisi Obilade.
According to the group, "the Janjaweed Arab militia in its war in Sudan's western region of Darfur "has raised the rape of women to an...art of war and a symbol of patriarchal power with a complete and absolute cold complicity from the Sudanese government in Khartoum".
Apart from the psychological trauma suffered by the rape victims, WARSHE noted, they also suffer physical consequences ranging from Human Immune Virus and Acquired Immuno-deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) infection through torn vagina walls, Vesico-Vagina Fistula (VVF) to unwanted pregnancies.
He described the situation as a "blight not only on African government and the so-called nationalist organisations perpetrating these criminal acts, but a complete and unbiased shame to the whole of Africa".
The women group, therefore, called on the African Union (AU) to, among others:
- isolate the Sudanese government for its criminal capacity in the development;
- take an immediate statistics of all the rape victims;
- pay special attention to rape victims in the on-going humanitarian assistance to war victims in Darfur Sudan;
- compel the Sudanese government to make special reparation to the rape victims;
- isolate any African government on whose territory rape is used as a weapon of war; and
- ensure that leaders of the Janjaweed Arab militia are held responsible for the crime and are tried in an open court.
