Obasanjo accuses police of hiring guns to robbers
From John-Abba, Ogbodo

PRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday upbraided security agencies, especially the Police and Customs, accusing them of abetting crimes in the country.

Speaking while opening a two-day summit on security organised by the House of Representatives, the President accused the Police of hiring out weapons to armed robbers.

The president cited a recent report he got on his way to Akwa Ibom that 142 AK 47 riffles were recovered from armed robbers in Rivers State.

"This is enough to equip a military company or enough to wage a war on a big city," the President remarked.

Speaking on the attitude of security officers, he declared: "Police hire out their guns to armed robbers, what do we do

  • Customs man is the chief smuggler, what do we do
  • What do we do with our borders
  • President Obasanjo did not spare religious bodies, as he wondered why they should accept donations from people of questionable characters.

He, however, expressed hope that his administration would continue to guarantee the security of lives and property.

Obasanjo challenged Nigerians to cooperate with the government by exposing criminals so that they do not find safe havens no matter their positions or places of origin.

He tasked the lawmakers to ensure that the nation's criminal laws were reviewed in line with the present situation.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari, in his own remarks, said that the essence of the summit was to allow all stakeholders make input in the process of making relevant criminal laws for the nation.

Also yesterday, the House of Representative began an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the transfer of N4.5 billion belonging to the National Automotive Council (NAC) to the Bank of Industry (BOI) and subsequent loans to the National Fertiliser Company of Nigeria (NAFCON).

The Minister of Industries, Mohammed Magaji and the Executive Secretary of NAC, Anthony Uchuma Igwe, explained that the action was to safeguard the funds.

Igwe said NAL had no hand in the management of the fund and could not have been part of the process of granting the loan to NAFCON.
