Why are we so blest

SIR: The 'Heart of Darkness' being unearthed in Okija, Anambra State has again brought to the fore a rather disturbing, bizarre instance/case of man's inhumanity to man. What with these terrifying gory details (human skull, decomposing bodies etc) the media have since been feeding the public with, courtesy of the human/slaughter slabs being kept by those insane individuals who in their varied bids to appease/offer libation to their gods, and/or selfish quest for cool, easy blood money are quick to hack down fellow human beings.

Good heavens! What are we drifting to

  • This latest display is the furthest we can go in making the outside world look down on the black race and dismiss the dark continent as "wicked, uncivilised, uncultured and backward". Especially so when the likes of Col. Joe Achuzie the Secretary General of the Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze-Ndigbo, are quick to argue that these ritual killings are in consonance with ancient killings and that "everybody in Igboland and Nigeria knows about the existence of shrines everywhere."

Nothing sums up these bizarre developments more lucidly than the question in an Ayi Kwei Armah title: Why are we so blest
