NATIONAL NEWS Police accept responsibility for killing of engineer By Gbenga Ariyibi Wednesday, August 11, 2004 ADO-EKITI — EKITI State Police command yesterday accepted responsibility for the killing of an engineer, Mr. Muyiwa Popoola who was shot dead on the streets of Ado-Ekiti on July 24, this year. It attributed the incident to over-zealousness on the part of its men. The State Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Patrick Egbuniwe representing the Commissioner told the state House of Assembly that the command was full of regrets for the killing. The police boss said the culprit had been dismissed from the service and would soon be charged to court, adding that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of operations had been queried and summoned to the headquarters His account: "On 14 July, when one Akeju came to report the case of armed robbery incident, it was later found that the robbers were at the post office and the police pursued them which subsequently led to a shoot-out. "Unfortunately, an innocent man was shot, and what could have been a sort of joy, turned out to sadness." He said that the command has embarked on training of its men, to ensure that such incident did not repeat itself. However, the lawmakers castigated the police for the failure to move Popoola to the hospital for medical attention, until he bled to death.
