Family rules out foul play in Debo Akande's death

By Yetunde Arebi & Adedayo Ogunniyi
Wednesday, August 11, 2004

LAGOS — Family of late Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Debo Akande (SAN) says it does not suspect any foul play in his death.

Speaking to Vanguard on behalf of the family yesterday, Justice Adenike Coker, first daughter of the deceased declared that the family refuses to accept that Chief Akande's death had anything to do with the case of Senator Iyiola Omisore who was recently tried and acquitted for the murder of late Chief Bola Ige (SAN).

Chief Debo Akande (SAN) had led the prosecuting team in the celebrated murder trial.
Justice Coker stated that the family was satisfied and proud of the conduct of Chief Akande throughout the trial, adding that since the verdict of the court had gone the way it did, he saw no other option but to withdraw from the case.

Chief Akande had in a letter to the Oyo State Commissioner of Justice said since he was not debriefed, not notified or consulted before it entered a nolle-prosequi, he did not see it as proper and honourable for him to accede to its (Commissioner of

Justice's) request to come and appear for the prosecution of the remaining accused persons.

Justice Adenike Coker, further said though the family did not know the cause of his death, but they are proud of him and are really grateful that he has lived a fulfilled life.

"We knew he touched a lot of people while he lived but we didn’t know that he touched such a great number of lives. He lived a fulfilled life. We had expected him to live to a ripe old age, she stated.

Meanwhile, sympathisers have continued to pay tributes to the late eminent legal practitioner. First republic senator and lawyer, Chief Sikiru Shitta-Bey described the late SAN as a highly talented and courageous man who fought for justice for Nigeria and Nigerians. "He was trust-worthy and disciplined. I would want more Nigerians to rise and emulate him."

Prince Bola Ajibola described Akande’s death as a shock and prayed his gentle soul to rest in peace.
Also Professor Anya O. Anya declared that Akande's place in history is assured because of the great way he touched the lives

of people, and prayed for God’s blessings and protection for the family.
