Police admit killing engineer in error
SUNDAY KUDAISI, Ado Ekiti
THREE
weeks after, police authorities in Ekiti State yesterday admitted that the
overzealousness of some of their men led to the death of Mr. Muyiwa Popoola.
Popoola, an engineer, was shot in the leg
by some policemen and allowed to bleed to death in their custody despite plea by
the state Assembly for his release to obtain medical treatment.
The House which considered the police
command’s refusal to heed its plea as a slight, subsequently invited the
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bashiru Azeez, to appear before it and explain the
force’s role in the incident.
Appearing before the lawmakers yesterday,
the state Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Patrick Egbuniwe told the lawmakers
that his boss did not ignore them but was away to Abuja for a security meeting.
Egbuniwe told them that during police
investigation into the shooting and death, it was discovered that
overzealousness of their men was responsible for the death of the victim.
According to him, the police discovered
during investigation that the deceased was maltreated by the police, pointing
out that the officer concerned had been sacked.
Popoola was alleged to be an armed robber
when he was shot, but was denied access to medical treatment before he bled to
death in police custody.
Mr. Egbuniwe said the officer who
committed the offence, apart from being sacked, had been arraigned and is facing
murder charges in court.
Responding Hon. Bunmi Olugbade,
representing Ekiti South-West I, said since the police had admitted that the
late Mr. Popoola was an innocent victim of their brutality, and also that they
were inefficient in the handling of the deceased’s case, they should tender
public apology and tell the world what they would do for the family of the
deceased.
The Speaker, Hon. Aderemi Friday, however,
called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mr. Tafa Balogun, to change the
orientation of the policemen.
