Obasanjo decries “Okada” riders’ recklessness

President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed concern over reports of acts of lawlessness exhibited by commercial motorcycle operators (Okada riders) against other road users, warning that henceforth, the owners of the motorcycles would be held responsible for such acts.
Speaking when members of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria called on him yesterday, the president concurred with his chief of staff, retired General Abdullahi Mohammed, who described Okada riders as terrorists.
“From what I see here, this appears to be the owners and not the riders. The riders to put it mildly, are becoming terrorists. If you have an accident with one of them, they will all gang up and do all kinds of things to that person.
“We must find a way of maintaining law and order, once a man falls off the machine, all the others (Okada riders) whether they know the cause of the accident or not, will rush to the spot to protect their member. They are becoming terrorists and we must do something about it.”
President Obasanjop warned that motorcycle owners would be held responsible for the misbehaviour of their agents.
“So if you buy a motorcycle and give it to somebody to ride and he misbehaves with it, since he is your agent, you may be liable for the man’s action. It is in your interest to ensure that the riders heed and obey the laws and do not take the law into their hands,” Obasanjo warned.
He urged them to encourage the riders to wear helmets for protection, recalling that as a junior officer, he (Obasanjo) almost lost his life in a motorcycle accident if not for the fact that he wore an helmet.
Earlier in his speech, the national president of the association, Chief Alfred Opara, said his association is made up of six million members across the country and called for the establishment of a transport regulatory authority on the tariff of imported motorcycles and spares.
