Day armed robbers stormed Ajaokuta
Wednesday, July 21,
2004, was indeed a
very sad day to remember in Ajaokuta. For, it was a day that hell was let loose in the hot afternoon sun in one of the banks by some armed men of the underworld. It was a day apparently, madness, terror, treachery, anarchy, and fear blossomed unabatedly to high heavens. It was also the day staff of the Ajaokuta Steel were collecting their salaries. But then, suddenly, the salary queue broke loose and everybody ran hysterically into the bush taking cover for safety. Indeed, it was a day, many market women, traders, and passers-by around the robbery scene ran to various directions for dear life. Even, policemen who came for rescue mission were also caught up in the web and ironically, removed their uniforms and raced into the bush for fear of being consumed by the penetrating fire power of strange bullets that were spraying mercilessly in all directions by the wicked and dreaded hoodlums.
This terrific account of that Wednesday afternoon’s madness in Ajaokuta, may, perhaps, sound funny and a bit ridiculous, but believe - you - me, it was a day residents of the city saw what was real terror in the daytime
The federal, state and local governments in the country, should, as a matter of urgency, face the facts by creating employments for hungry Nigerians who are roaming the streets of this country. In the same vein, our governments must find a way of empowering our restive youths as well as jobless adults to curb this menace of armed bandits. For, what benefits do we derive when a great percentage of our youths and adults are wallowing in deep hunger, abject poverty, degradation, distress and severe pain and our leaders are busy parading the outside world celebrating and eulogizing the country Nigeria as a giant of Africa?
Our leaders must wake up now, learn to listen and act fast before armed robbers take over the entire country.
