A group, Association of Anambra State Development Union in Lagos (AASDU) has thrown its weight behind the raid on the Okija shrines by men of the Nigeria police saying it supports the efforts to dismantle primordial culture/tradition that tend to negate the dignity of human life. It however urged the police to extend the raid to other parts of the country. In a statement signed by its publicity secretary, Mr Chris Nwosu, the group said that without prejudice to the right of individuals to practice the religion of their choice as guaranteed in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, AASDU encourages and supports every effort by the Nigeria Police Force to dismantle elements of our primordial culture/tradition that tends to negate the dignity of human life as was apparent in the recent discoveries at Okija shrines.
“AASDU wishes to encourage the Anambra state police command to liaise with the state government in extending its searchlight to other communities in the state in particular and the nation at large where traditionalists have taken advantage of age long beliefs (real or unreal) to instigate and perpetrate heinous crimes some of which borders on violation of individual rights, conspiracy and in extreme cases, cold blooded murder. In the light of the startling revelations of the recent Okija raid, AASDU enjoins the leadership and traditional institutions of communities in Anambra state to brace up to the challenges of the times by aligning with the necessary organs and forces to encourage reforms capable of removing those aspects of our traditions that demean the very basis of human existence. Such leaders should draw inspiration from the celebrated destruction of the long juju of Arochukwu by colonialists, Igwe Umunneoha and Efuru of Ukehe to mention just few.
