Yabatech students protest lack of amenities

    CHARLES ABAH

ACADEMIC and administrative activities were, yesterday, paralysed at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Lagos following students’ protest against certain management policies and lack of amenties.

The protest began Wednesday night and by yesterday morning, the situation degenerated as the institution’s two main gates were locked by angry students who chased away all the security operatives on duty.

Also, the principal officers as well as academic and non-teaching staff kept away from the college, yesterday, ostensibly to avoid the students’ wrath.

The protest, Daily Champion learnt, was led by the Students Union officials whose target were the security personnel stationed at the two gates and the Director of Security Matters, Mr. A. Olawepo.

The students who brought the extension of their forthcoming first semester examination for two weeks, also canvassed the removal of Mr. Olawepo and the armed security officers at the gates, provision. of water and electrictiy and the lifting of restriction placed on movement into their hostels.

While students chant anti-management songs, staff who were caught in the heat of the protest were prevented from entering the college, resulting in heavy traffic around the roads connecting to the institution.

As at press time, the two gates were locked even as Daily Champion gathered that the students’ leadership and the management led by the Rector, Mr. Olubunmi Owoso were holding a closed door meeting at the college Guest House.
