Couple arraigned over illegal land deal A couple, Mr. And Mrs. Emeka and Joyce Ugwu have been arraigned before an Abuja Chief Magistrate sitting in Jabi District for illegal land speculation. They are charged with criminal conspiracy breach of trust, cheating, forgery and abetment contrary to sections 97, 312, 322, 365 and 83 of Penal Code had in April, 2003 collected N1, 915,000.00 from one Gloria Esiaba of Lugbe Village, Abuja with a promise to procure six (6) plots of land at Kubwa for her. The prosecution told the court that part of the money was obtained through Mrs. Joyce Ugwu who provided five allocation papers, which were fake. The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges. Defence counsel, Francis Uzoegbu prayed that the court should grant bail to accused persons according to section 340 and 341 of the criminal procedure code (CPC) also, 36 sub (5) of the constitution, adding that the accused persons have been in police bail and if refused bail their children would suffer. The presiding Chief Magistrate, Othman Musa, taking into cognizance that some of the charges are not ordinarily bailable, granted them bail in the sum of N2 million and a surety. The case was adjourned to October 13, 2004 for hearing.
