Consensus Candidacy on 2007 Presidency Undemocratic -Aliero
By Ndubuisi Francis

Governor Adamu Aliero of Kebbi State yesterday declared that the resolve of the northern part of the 2007 presidency remained unshaken but noted that adopting a consensus approach in chosing one out of the presidential aspirants from the zone jostling for the job would be undemocratic.

Aliero who fielded questions from newsmen at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos yesterday it was logical that the Presidency should go to the north in 2007.

He reaffirmed that the 19 northern governors had at their meeting maintained that come 2007, the presidency should go back to the zone, adding: "And we stand by that decision".

The governor who stated that the zone would do everything possible to actualise that ambition, said although he was not a member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), prominent members of the party, including the governors had said that there was an understanding that the north should have the plum job in 2007.

"And if it goes to the north for some time, it should go back to the south and there was no question of geo-political zone. We (northren governors) conceded to that agreement. So, even though I am not of the PDP but I think that this is more sensible and more logical to agree with that explanation than to start saying that it must rotate withing the geo-political zones", he said.

On whether the north would adopt a consensus approach in deciding who becomes their flag bearer considering the reported presidential interest of many prominent politicians from the zone, the governor said consensus method was undemocratic.

The governor who also reacted to the unfolding drama of reported killings in Okja, anambra State, noted that the story was saddening and recommended appropriate punishment for the perpetrators.
