India Seeks Cooperation with Nigeria on Oil, Gas From Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja An Indian Trade Delegation yesterday expressed India's interest to invest in nation's economy, especially in the oil and gas sector. Speaking during a courtesy visit to Presidential Adviser to the President on Petroleum and Energy, Dr. Edmund Daukoru, head of the trade mission and India's Secretary for Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr. M.S. Sirnivasan, painted an impressive picture of Nigeria's performance in the oil and gas sectors. "Nigeria's role in African affairs has been further accentuated by the prominent place it occupies in the world oil and gas map", he said, adding that Nigeria was steadily moving towards becoming a major economic force in the petroleum sector. India and Nigeria he said, share lots of similarities both in population and energy potentials and as such hoped to explore these similarities for mutual economic benefit. He spoke of his country's preparedness to work with the Nigerian National Petroleum Cooperation (NNPC) to execute joint operations and also to participate in bidding for new oil blocks scheduled to open in 2005. The seven-man delegation further expressed India's interest to invest in the up stream refinery plants and in the area of civil aviation, coal and other industries. Earlier, the Adviser had told the visiting team that the Federal Government was ready to maintain mutually rewarding investment relations with interested countries in the oil and gas sectors, but would like such investors to be prepared to address such issues as local content and technology transfer.
