Lufthansa Denies Increasing Fares By Ndubuisi Francis Leading European carrier, Lufthansa German Airlines, has stated that there has not been any increase in either its First or Business Class fares in spite of the spiralling fuel prices even as it denied involvement in flight overbookings. General Manager (West Africa), Mr. Michael Wurche, who made the clarifications in Lagos said the airline did not adjust its fares by any margin, noting that what it was doing was promotional fares in its economy class tickets during the high season. According to him, Lufthansa, being an airline that accords the highest compliance to the rules and regulations of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has continued to remain within the fare limits recommended by the government. Giving an insight into the situation presently, Wurche said the government's authorised maximum fare level for the economy class tickets from Nigeria to London is about $1,899. He, however, noted that airlines sell most tickets at much lower prices at market fares otherwise known as promotional fares which are well below the authorised structure. Wurche argued that bearing in mind that the limit pegged by the government is $1,899, if an airline increases its lowest promotion fare from $699 dollars to $999 during the high season, there should be no need for approval in doing this since it still falls far below the $1,899.
