Saraki Explains Economic Programmes
From Tunde Sanni in Ilorin
Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State has said the economic programmes of the government are de-signed to create jobs and promote economic self-reliance.
Saraki, while inspecting a new motorcycle assembly plant built by Chellarams Plc in Ilorin, said no country can attain economic development by relying on importation of goods and services.
He described the assembly plant as "a fruit of the partnership" between the government and private investors in the state.
"I am happy that our public-private partnership strategy is bearing fruit" Saraki said and expressed confidence that the scheme would create employment, reduce dependence on imports and promote technology transfer.
The governor who was conducted round the assembly plant by a director of Chellarams, Mr Jaya Shankar, was satisfied with the progress attained by the company, saying the project would further empower more youths and reduce poverty in the state.
He also urged beneficiaries of the motorcycle loan scheme to pay back in good time and assured others who have not benefited to be patient as other programmes are in the pipeline to cushion the effect of poverty.
Malam Shuaib Abdulkareem, a technician at the plant thanked the state government for its policies aimed at creating employment for the youths.
The Governor also paid similar visit to the site of the on-going cargo terminal building at the Ilorin International Airport, where he expressed displeasure at the slow pace of work by the contractor.
He told the contractor handling the job, Henry George Construction Company to complete the project on schedule and notify him of any constraints.
The Managing Director of the company, Prince Nelson Oladimeji who conducted Saraki round the project site, promised that the job would be completed by February, next year.
