CRS Dumps NECO
From Amby Uneze in Calabar

The law, enacted by the National Assembly, establishing the National Exami-nations Council (NECO), has been disregarded by the Cross River State Government, in place of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), saying that it runs counter to proper educational calendar in the state.

NECO, which is the Nigerian equivalent to WAEC, established some years ago, has been recognised by most universities and other higher institutions in the country as an entry requirement into courses offered by them.

But contrary to this, the government said it only recognises the examinations conducted by WAEC, which is the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

Briefing Government House Corespondents on the outcome of the state executive council meeting on Wednesday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Dominic Kidzu, said students are free to register for NECO in their private capacities.

Kidzu said government took the responsibility to pay for WAEC fees because it wants students to pass WAEC examinations without labouring their parents.

Government also said public schools premises would not henceforth be used for the purposes of holding the NECO examinations.

It also said all teachers in the employment of the state government have been restricted from supervising NECO examinations, stressing that NECO authorities are advised to seek private centres for its examinations, as well as hire its invigilators.

The governor's spokesman maintained that the step was taken to avoid the current wave of disruption of academic programmes in secondary schools, where the third term of the school calendar is devoted for external examinations, thereby depriving teachers of the opportunity of teaching their wards, because of their involvement in examination invigilation.

Government also resolved that all secondary school principals in the state must endeavour to teach at least one subject, to help in the academic development of their students.
