Ohaneze Chieftain Condemns Wabara, Kalu Face-Off
From Christopher Isiguzo in Owerri
A Chieftain of Ohaneze Ndigbo, a pan Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Chief Uwaoma Uche, has condemned the lingering face-off between the Senate President, Chief Adolphus Wabara and Governor Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia State, describing it as unnecessary and anti-democratic.
He told newsmen in Owerri, Imo State, yesterday, that a situation where the Federal Government officicals were always at cross-roads with their state counterparts, especially in the South-east, was not in the interest of the zone, especially now that Igbos are clamouring for the presidency come 2007.
Uche, who is also a senior lecturer at the University of Calabar, urged Wabara to use his office as the number three citizen to seek ways of resolving the impasse.
He insisted that they should not allow a repeat of what happened in Ebonyi State, during the time of Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, which led to loss of lives.
"We don't want the Egwu/Anyim saga to repeat itself in Abia State. Office of the Senate President should not be used as an institution to fan the ember of discord, but rather, to bring people together," he said.
While identifying the 2007 governorship of the state as the cause of the impasse, Uche urged the two politicians to emulate the good spirits of Dr. Michael Okpara and Akanu Ibiam, who promoted Igbo's unity when they were in power.
According to him, the crisis would have no positive effect on the polity, but would rather deny the people of Abia and South-east in general, the real dividends of democracy, urging the Senate President to ensure that he uses his office to attract investments and federal presence to his home state.
Speaking on the Igbo Presidency Project, Uche said Igbos were prepared to realise the project, as they have started reaching out to other geopolitical zones.
