Customs Urged to Support Economic Reforms
From Onwuka Nzeshi in Warri

Nigeria Customs Service has been charged to support the new economic reforms initiated by the Federal Government, especially those pertaining to due process, accountability, transparency and ban on importation of contraband goods.

Customs Zonal Co-ordinator in charge of Zone 'C', Alhaji F.O. Amasa, gave the advice yesterday, while addressing officers and men of the Delta/Edo Area Command in Warri.

Amasa, an Assistant Comptroller General (ACG), observed that with the new reforms, it behoves on the officers to show dedication and loyalty to the Service, despite various inadequacies in terms of logistic support and financial resources form the Federal Government.

"We do not have adequate facilities and resources for the roles we are supposed to play, but we must endeavour to do our best by not only shaking off corruption and misdemeaneour, but by imbibing accountability and transparency.

"We should take cognisance of the new reforms such as NEEDS, and ensure that the ban placed on the importation of a range of goods was enforced and made effective," Amasa admonished.

Earlier, the Customs Area Comptroller, Delta and Edo Commands, Mr. Eno Ofem, briefed Amasa on the activities of the command, revealing that the command had generated a total of N4.47billion within the first six months of this year.

ThisDay gathered that the amount represents 16.64 per cent over what was collected in the corresponding period last year. It is also about 50 per cent of the target set for this year.

Ofem, said the revenue profile was a far cry from what it should have been, if the business climate in Warri were conducive. He disclosed that persistent ethnic hostilities have almost completely paralysed all economic activities at the Ports.
