Lagos State Police Commissioner (CP), Mr Israel Ajao, has called on community leaders to join the police in combating crime in the state.
Ajao made the statement yesterday at the Palace of the Eze Ndi Igbo of Lagos, Eze Nwabuwze Ohazulike, adding that the police can not fight crime without the co-operation and contribution of community leaders.
The CP, who was on official visit to the Palace, advised them to assist the police with information, stating that the confession of a robber led to the arrest of Tijani Amana, and that the police need information to succeed in the war against crime.
"My first crusade in Lagos is fight against robbers and we are working tirelessly to smoke them out wherever they are. We will not compromise with any of them at all and anybody that want to work with me must be ready to join the fight.
"The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Tafa Balogun, is presently working on Police Community Relations, but before he gets to Lagos, lets start our own. I want the Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba communities to join the police in preaching peace, love and unity, so that we can sleep with two eyes closed," Ajao stressed.
"There is no society that is totally free of crime, but the important thing is the ability to control it. Always inform us whenever you discover anything unusual", he said.
He frowned at extortion, stating that the police is seriously working round the clock to clamp down on policemen involved, and that any officer involved in it is doing so at his detriment, adding that the IG, AIG and his office are strongly against it.
The Igwe, in his responce, explained that he has been on the crusade for peace among the three major ethnic groups in Lagos, adding that the visit of the CP would energise his campaign for unity.
