Put National Interests First, Politicians Advised Sokoto From Ahmed Oyerinde in Sokoto Politicians in the country have been warned not to allow their personal ambitions override national interests, to ensure a lasting democratic arrangement for the country. Issuing the warning in an interview yesterday, former military administrator of Ekiti and Gombe states, Colonel Muhammadu Inua Bawa (rtd), said the warning has become necessary, in view of the personal ambition of some individuals who want to become president at all costs. He warned that if we should go into 2007 with this attitude, there might be disintegration or fragmentation of the major political parties, which, according to him, was not good for our nascent democracy. Such fragmentation, he added, would come easily, since none of the parties was formed on any ideological platform, but rather, a collection of strange bedfellows who were only around to grab power come what may. On why meaningful progress has eluded the nation so far, Bawa said this is so, because "we are a nation with no sense of history." According to him, each successive crop of leadership only refer to the past, to explain its inaction and failures. His words "the past is always looked upon with disdain, instead of using it and its lessons to illuminate the present and plan ahead."
