FG Clears F irm of Tax Evasion Rivers By Eugene Agha Officials of the Federal Inland Revenue (FIR) has insisted that the alleged non-payment of Pay As You Go (PAYE) and withholding of tax levelled against the management of West African Oilfied Sservice (WAOS) by Ofscon and Chemstroncs was baseless and unfounded. This was contained in a statement by the FIR's Area Controller, River State, Mr. E.V Tyem, to security operatives detailed to investigate the allegations by the office of the presidency. According to him, this became necessary to absolve the management of WAOS from the allegations since they have paid their taxes until December 2003, saying he was in charge of the administration of company tax laws in the state and was in a better position to know which company was owing tax and what amount was owed. The statement read: "I am a 51 year old man, from Langtan in Plateau State and a civil servant serving with the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Port Harcourt Rivers State. I am the Area Tax Controller in charge of the administration of the company income tax laws in the area office. "My schedule includes the collection and the accessing of taxes, which includes the collection of withholding taxes from limited companies and plc. It is pertinent to mention that taxes from enterprises, corporations sole partnership etc. are collected by the State Inland Revenue Services."
