VC Alleges Threat to Life
IMO
From Christopher Isiguzo in Owerri
Vice Chancellor of Fed-eral University of Tech-nology, Owerri (FUTO), Prof. Jude Njoku, has alleged a threat to his life and that of other principal officers of the university, following the expulsion of 60 students of the institution over examination malpractices.
Briefing newsmen in his office yesterday as part of activities lined up for his fourth year anniversary as the institution's vice chancellor, Njoku said principal officers of the university especially himself, his two deputies and the registrar had received threat letters and text messages warning them to rescind their decision or be dealt with.
Already, he noted, attempt was made to burn down the office of the registrar, but for the timely intervention of security operatives but called for adequate security arrangement in the area.
On his achievement so far, the vice chancellor said peace and tranquility now exists on the campus, adding that while some other institutions had lost one to two years as a result of academic crisis, FUTO is strictly complying with the academic calendar.
He observed that the activities of cultists had been reduced to the barest minimum, noting that becasue of their tight academic programmes, students no longer have time to play around with cultism.
While expressing dismay that they were yet to access their capital grants for the past three years, Njoku said most of their projects were funded from internally generated revenue which, he noted, had risen from N29 million in 2000 to N353 million in 2004.
Meanwhile, a 200 level civil engineering student of Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Mr. Stanley Egwu Oko was Tuesday murdered by fellow student, Emmanuel Douglas who is now at large.
Confirming the incident, the vice chancellor noted that the incident happened at Obinze near Owerri while the two students were gambling.
"In the course of the gambling, disagreement came into it and they were said to have fought along the line. Oko sustained serious injuries that he bled to death," he said, adding that police had started searching for the killer. The Police Public Relations Officer of the Imo State Police Command could not be reached for his comment as he was said to be away on an official assignments.
