Alliance for Democracy (AD) candidate for the National Assembly in the last general election for the North-central zone of Plateau State, Mr. Philemon Dewan, has decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Dewan, a member of the Frederick Kopbwul-led AD in the state, told newsmen at an interaction that his decampment was informed by the present circumstance the state has found itself.
His words: "After a series of consultations at all levels, we have arrived at the inevitable conclusion that what Plateau State needs most at a time like this, is unity, and a singleness of purpose among all stakeholders. We must put behind us all the forces and tendencies that divided us in the past, and collectively embrace and promote the path of unity, peace and progress."
While noting that hundreds of his supporters were also decamping from AD to PDP, Dewan averred that there was sufficient political space for all, adding that all politicians must eschew the politics of exclusivity and adopt an all-inclusivity and adopt all inclusive attitude towards one another. "We all stand to gain if only we can resist the temptation of viewing politics as a winner-take-all game rather than a game in which all participants can be winners in a spirit of give-and-take. We therefore cannot afford to continue to make a laughing stock of ourselves through needless strife and in-fighting," he added.
According to him, the chairman of the faction and all others decamping have already set the machinery in motion to give effect to their decision at all levels of political structure.
Dewan assuaged the fears of those who are concerned about their return which is being perceived as eroding the existence of meaningful, credible and responsible opposition to the ruling party. "Such has all along provided the platform for a credible opposition in the state.
"We would like to assure all and sundry, however, that our decision to return to PDP does not in any way subtract from our collective resolve to always speak out loud and clear on all topical issues, especially where we believe there is an actual or potential threat to the Nigerian constitution, to democratic principles, or to the rule of law," he stressed.
