Fresh Polio Outbreak Recorded
Benue
From Daniel Ior in Makurdi
Three local government areas in Benue State are still under threat of polio as fresh cases of the desease have been reported in the areas.
The local governments include Obi, Apa and Agatu already devastated by the disease, are currently under investigation by health authorities to ascertain the level of the attack.
At least eight cases were reported in the state last year while one case has been officially reported in Obi this year.
In Apa Local Government area for instance, THISDAY investigations indicate that at least two per cent of the children between the ages of 1 to 14 years have been affected by the disease.
Mr. Dennis Oshimagye, Benue State Cordinator of National Programme on Immunisation, said "in every one case of the disease reported, there are 200 cases not known."
The local government's Chairman, Hon. Samson Ocholi, told THISDAY that the child population in the council is in danger if efforts to eradicate the disease do not receive continued and persistent action.
Ocholi's fears are coming on the heels of the date set by the international donors and sponsors to terminate funding of the programmes on eradication of the disease in the country.
Under the programme, funding of the polio eradication programme is scheduled to terminate by December 2004.
The date followed previous dates which had to be postponed twice following inability of the country to effectively eradicate the disease in the country.
Mrs. Mary Stephen, mother of Oyiwoda Stephen, one of the victims of the disease, told THISDAY that the family was being overburdened by the problems caused by the disease in their family.
Parents of the children affected by the disease told THISDAY that apart from the problem of lack of special schools to train the polio affected children, there were additional problems of the special care they need in their up keep.
