...Govt Intensifies Effort to Eradicate Polio Bayelsa From John Iwori in Yenagoa Bayelsa State government has intensified efforts to eradicate polio disease totally in the state. To this end, the last Thursday of every month has been set aside to organise routine immunisation day in all health facilities and outreach centres in the state. In a statement by the the state Commissioner of Health, Dr. Ayibapreye Baralatei, government would embark on active surveillance, supplementary immunisation and mop-up campaign to ensure that the incidence of the disease is contained to the barest minimum, if not totally eradicated. According to the statement, the state government renewed efforts was not unconnected with the recent four cases of polio detected in some remote riverine communities in Sagbama and Ekeremor Local Government areas. "To avoid further spread of the disease, two days early next week would be set aside to embark on supplementary activities in the affected communities, in addition to the national immunisation days slated for September, October and November this year," the statement added. The commissioner explained that these months have been selected for another phase of the National Immunisation Day (NID) exercise across the country to ensure adequate coverage of the state. He commended the state Governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, for his moral and financial support for the activities aimed at eradicating polio in the state, calling on parents in the state to avail themselves of the various immunisation days in the state by ensuring that their children and wards are adequately immunised.
