LG Boss Flays Call for Secession
From Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu

Chairman of the Igboeze North West Development Centre (equivalent of a Local government)in Enugu state, Chief Emmanuel Alachi, has condemned those canvassing for the secession of the centre from the state and accused them of fanning the embers of discord.

A High Court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State had last week dismissed the moves by a group of people to have Ette excised and moved into Kogi State.

Reacting to the Court ruling, Alachi told newsmen in Enugu that he has been vindicated by his persistent call for tolerance and for Nigerians to learn to live together as citizens of one entity.

Ette, described as a settler community populated by Igala people in Enugu State has witnessed open agitation by a group of persons demanding that they be merged with Kogi state where their kith and kins are domiciled.

But Alachi insisted that such moves were uncalled for as Ette community remains a part and parcel of Enugu State in all ramifications.

He commended the administration of Chimaroke Nnamani for giving Ette people a sense of belonging in the affairs of the state, adding that the government has done everything to make the people feel at home.

Said Alachi: "I will still ask our people to remain calm and law-abiding. We have a historical and cultural relationship with the Igbo of Enugu State.

Besides, we have got a fair share of appointments and patronage under this administration. Ette is the headquarters of a development centre. An Ette son is a permanent secretary in the state, the first ever in our time."

The council boss also cited the on-going work on the Nsukka-Ogrute-Ette road, a cottage hospital, primary school blocks and a new model secondary school, as pointers of the good things for Ette, adding, "we have never had it so good."
