South Korean Sets Archery Record
How Nigeria Can Win Gold Medals - Amu

Technical Committee Chairman of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, (AFN), Alhaji Abdul Kareem Amu says winning gold medals at the Olympics is the outcome of a well-followed programme.

Speaking against the backdrop of the Sports Ministry's insistence that the 10 gold medals target set for the Nigerian party to this summer's games starting in Athens today was achievable, Alhaji Amu said yesterday in Lagos that instead of spending money to launder the country's image abroad, a minute percentage of that amount on athletes will produce positive results.

"Spend more money on athletes and see the wonder it will do for this country's image. You cannot be aspiring to win medals when you have not adequately planed for it.''

Amu, who represented Nigeria at the 1960 Rome Olympics in the sprint event, said that giving money to athletes few days to the Olympics was meaningless as such funds were not meant for preparation but to shop.

"Training grants are meant to prepare athletes several months to the Olympics. Some even give grants spread over years. What this means is that such athletes will not have the distraction of competing for money in the circuits. They will stay focussed on their training schedule aimed to peak at the Olympics. That is how serious countries prepare to win gold medals," observed the athletics chief.

Recalling how he missed the finals of the 100m event of the Rome Games, Amu said: "If it was now that the tracks are now eight lanes I would have made the final. I ran in the fastest semi final. Virtually all the first three finished in that order in the final. At least I would have been picked for the last eight if it was now."

Amu believes Nigeria's chances in Athens are as bright 'as we prepared for the games.'
