Squash: Kwara May Lose N50m Academy to Edo
By Ayodeji Fashikun

Kwara State may lose the Squash-Kwara Academy project midwifed by some Nigerians to Edo State due to the recent instability in the state's sports council.

This was disclosed yesterday by the man in the centre of the project, Barrister Adegbenro Gbadamosi who said: "We have already concluded with the financing of the project in which we are intending to invest about N50m in 2005 alone covering five training centres in Ilorin."

He explained further: "We chose Kwara originally because of the impact and pressure of Mrs. Sarah Bola Esan, a former top athlete and Director of Sports and the Chairman of the Sports Council Board, Prince Yemi Afolayan.

"Our idea of this project is private funding but a convenient but conducive environment from the state government. We also considered the fact that Kwara had a tradition in the game. Now that there is an open instability and government insensitivity we have no option than to open discussion with Edo State, the other state with a respectable tradition in the discipline,"

The lawyer with sports bias added, "We will by weekend head to Edo. The fact that their Director of Sports is a former athlete like Esan is a strong factor working for them. Kwara was, honestly our best choice until the state government showed its colour."

The bespectacled Offa-born Lagos-based legal practitioner said, "the Squash-Kwara Academy project was supposed to kick-off in January 2005. We (the Board of the Project) would be meeting tomorrow to ratify the effects of the latest move of the Kwara State government."

It would be recalled that the Ministry of Sports had been involved in a contest of power with the Director of Sports, Mrs. Esan until she was re-deployed to the Ministry.
