ILO, TUC Call for Review of Labour Policies
By Onwudo Francis

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) as well as the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have emphasised the need for a review of some of the labour policies in Nigeria.

The two bodies which met recently in the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) secretariat in Lagos, also said there was need for social dialogue, stressing that labour was critical in the country's development.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) team which was led by Professor Tayo Fashoyin, Senior Social Dialogue Specialist in Focus Programme in Geneva, Switzerland, was on a fact-finding mission to Nigeria on assisting affiliates in capacity building, training need and to develop a framework on macro-labour policy.

In a release signed by the Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Chief John Kolawole, both bodies recognised the role of power in industrial relations and the way in which such power was used. Though they said that dialogue may not be popular now, as time goes on it will work.

The group chided the position of the Labour Ministry in the handling of disputes which has led to labour crisis. "The TUC complained of the weak position of the Labour Ministry in the settlement of disputes, which has led to industrial crises everywhere," they said.

Fashoyin reiterated the need for negotiation in order to reach an agreement. "There is need to always negotiate in order to arrive at a compromise and the process must be collaborative because if the enterprises fail, people will go home," he said.

The international body advised the Trade Union Congress to expand and become very formidable and serious fto such an extent that any group cannot ignore it.
