Olowu stool tussle a family affair - Obasanjo

By Segun Adeleye

Reporter, Abeokuta

There seems to be a let up in the impasse that characterised the selection process of the new Olowu of Owu as President Olusegun Obasanjo said he has accepted blames heaped on him “ as a leader”.

He is also the traditional Prime Minister of Owu-Abeokuta.

The President, who spoke at his Ota farm after a meeting with a section of the kingmakers, described the recent happenings at Owu, his ancestral home, as a family affair, even as he assured that the forthcoming Owu Day celebration scheduled for Saturday would hold in grand style.

“I have made the point known several times that anything in Owu is a family affair, and since it is a responsible family, we don’t wash our dirty linen in the public”, he said.

Of the eight-member kingmakers, only Adisa Adewolu, Ola Yusuf and Obasanjo attended. Those absent were Rufus Onifade, Sunday Olufemi Oguntolu, Fusianu Osunboye, Ramoni Ogunbiyi and Olawale Oladunjoye.

At a press briefing, which lasted five minutes, the President said he had to show goodwill on the matter by accepting to host the reconciliatory meeting, brokered by the Ogun  State Governor Gbenga Daniel.

At Obasanjo’s prodding, the Olotu  of Owu, Chief Ogo-Oluwa Bankole, who attended the Monday news conference with the five aggrieved kingmakers said: “ We thank God for being able to resolve the crisis. There is no division in Owu any more. Owu Day would be held as scheduled because Owu Day is for reconciliation. We cannot lose that opportunity”.

Obasanjo praised Daniel for brokering the meeting, saying he has made it a principle not to be offended by what had been said about him by several people on the issue.

He added that the governor would be briefed on the outcome of the parley.

A 15-member committee had been set up by Daniel to broker peace in the obaship crisis after a stalemate last Monday on the selection of the new Olowu.  The last Olowu, Oba Olawale Adisa Odeleye, Lagbedu 1, joined his ancestors on June 11 2003.
