Minister of Water
Resources, Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, has handed over to the Niger State
Government about 500 hand pumps as part of the Federal Government
contribution to the provision of potable water to people of the state.
Presenting the pumps at the
Government House, Minna, last Thursday, Shagari also disclosed that the
Federal Government has budgeted N470 million to ensure that potable water
got to the most remote part of the state.
The gesture, according to him,
is in line with government resolve to provide social amenities to larger
number of electorates who reside in rural areas across the country.
The Federal Government, he
said, have invested hugely in the infrastructural development of Niger
State especially in the water resources sub-sector. Two out of the three
dams in the state namely; Tungan-Kawo and Swashi are part of the Federal
Government completed projects, he said, adding that more funds would be made
available towards the completion of the Kagara Dam, which has been
abandoned since 1981.
He advised Governor Abdullahi
Kure to intensify efforts in lobbying the National Assembly for timely
provision of funds to aid completion of the Kagara Dam next year.
The Obasanjo administration,
he explained, has no intention of living any projects uncompleted,
pointing out that part of its resolve was to ensure completion of
projects, which have reached about 50 per cent ratio across the country
and called for cooperation and support to enable the Federal Government
achieve its set objectives.
Responding, Governor Kure
commended efforts of the Federal Government to provide social amenities
to the citizenry. He, however, suggested that the Federal Government
hands off the Tungan-Kawo and Swashi dams for a more effective management
by the state government.
