Labour bill: NLC to appeal to NASS

By Bimbo Kesington

Labour Reporter., Lagos

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said it would make a formal appeal to the National Assembly not to pass the proposed amendment of the Trade Union Act by the Federal Government, which attempts to proscribe Labour, abolish check-off dues and prohibit strikes.

Rising from an emergency Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Thursday in Lagos, Adams Oshiomhole, NLC president, said the congress had resolved to appeal to the National Assembly to look at the long-term implications of passing a bill that is hinged on bad fate.

“We have resolved to make a strong formal appeal to the leadership and membership of the National Assembly for them to put the longest democratic interest of Nigerian into consideration and the NLC for the purpose for which it is being persecuted.”

According to him, the decision to appeal to the National Assembly was because “we want to remind the National Assembly that they had joined us by going on the motion in calling on the president to revert the increases in the price of fuel. We haven’t taken a decision that is different from that of the National Assembly on the petroleum price issue, only that we went beyond the word of mouth by taking concrete actions.”

Oshiomhole said, “We are convinced that that the government is acting in bad faith and that this amendment is described as a punishment for the NLC and the trade union movement on account of our leadership together with the rest of the civil society to protect Nigerian workers and masses from obnoxious petroleum pricing policy.”
