Nigeria still leads in cassava production By Dan Alo, Correspondent, Lagos   The Federal Governments’ effort to consolidate the country’s hold on the worldwide cassava market is yielding dividends as Nigeria, during the week, emerged the largest producer of the crop in the world. In the report made available by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a subsidiary of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), for the consideration of N2.5 billion agricultural loan to farmers in the country, IFAD pointed out that “with the production of 10,000 metric tonnes of cassava in the last fiscal year, Nigeria is back as the largest producer of the crop in the world.” The report observed that the country would have exceeded the present production level if it has modern storage facilities to meet up with the modern trend in the world. IFAD advised that proper policies should be put in place to assist farmers to benefit directly from all the assisted projects coming from international agencies and an improvement made on the hinterland road network.       Copyright� 2002.
